-“I don’t know” response when asked about something unknown

The key difference between this level and the next highest level (A2) is that learners at this level will be able to understand or say single words along with very short phrases, but may not be able to communicate in full sentences independently.

Some examples of phrases they could use would include:

“Where is the restaurant?”

“I saw a bird.”

A1 language learners will not be able to:

-Express their needs in English

-Give an opinion about something they have seen or heard

-Ask for more information about something they have understood

-Answer questions that are longer than yes/no questions

There are three different types of examination at this level which can be taken. These include: A1 written examinations, A1 listening examinations and the A1 spoken examination. All of these exams are designed to show how well a learner has done on the overall assessment. There are also two sub levels within the beginner level which are A1a and A1b. The difference between these sub levels is the number and type of language skills they can use.

LEVEL B1-B2

For levels B1 – B2 this level is assessed by a students skills in English. The person has to be able to interact in English with speakers of the language independent from the examiner .

Following are some key features of this level:

-Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.

-Can handle very simple text on topics that are close to his/her experience.

-Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

-Can interact with a speaker or writer at a limited pace using simple phrases learnt by heart or set expressions.

The characteristic feature of this level is that learners can communicate with other people provided they share common interests or experiences. What a b1 Level student cannot do is interact with people that have very different interests or experiences.

The examination includes both a written and an oral part. It measures the ability to communicate in English on familiar matters like at work, school or home (B1). The tests do not assume any knowledge of English grammar. Only vocabulary may be insufficient for communication. This is why emphasis is put on words rather than structures.

Candidates are expected to answer fairly simple questions about their personal background and immediate environment (e.g., where he/she lives, people they know), concrete topics (e.g., rooms in someone’s house, types of fruit) and social studies-related subjects (e.g., town planning, education). They can also give some opinions on issues related current events

C1-C2

Level C1 – C2 students are expected to be able to use English both accurately and fluently when dealing with a wide range of demanding, longer texts. Learners at this level are expected to have reached an advanced level in terms of their command of English .

The following are some key features of the C1 Level:

-Can understand views expressed in complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation.

-Can summarise information from different types of complex language input, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.

-Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even when the expression is not premeditated.

Learners at this level can be involved in almost all types of formal and informal interaction. They can understand extended pieces of information in English, especially if they are related to topics that are familiar. Learners at this level can use advanced language skills like doing comparisons between different points of view for instance. They will be able to produce accurate text using more complicated structures and vocabulary with ease .

Exams and why they are needed

The examination includes two parts; the first part is written (C1) where candidates write about topics related to their own lives (e.g., work, studies, family). The second part is oral (C2) which tests the ability to speak spontaneously on various subjects (“the media” or “shopping”).

What learners at C1 and C2 levels do not need to know is how to structure phrases, clauses or sentences in English. They have got this knowledge already.

The following are some key features of the C2 level:

-Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation.

What are the CEFR proficiency levels?

The CEFR proficiency levels are A-C, with each level corresponding to different abilities.

A – Basic User: Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at satisfying the needs of a concrete type.

B – Independent User: Can handle most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.

C – Proficient User: Can communicate with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain their viewpoint on topical issues giving relevant arguments.

Which CEFR levels are required?
